ISBN: 0-9533033-4-9
Now & Then - Abu Dhabi is a photographic insight into the beautiful capital of the United Arab Emirates. During research for Now & Then - The Emirates, it became apparent that there was a wealth of old photographs of Abu Dhabi, the capital city as well as Abu Dhabi the emirate. A 1932 photograph showing Sheikh Shakbut and his party, being rowed in a boat flying the traditional red flag, out to an RAF Singapore flying boat, came to light; a picture of gazelles on Abu Dhabi was found and delightful photographs showing bedu children were unearthed. These old images make up the 'then' part of this coffee-table book. Photographer Nick Crawley then photographed these areas in modern times. The contrast creates stunning visuals, these are the 'now' part.
The growth of Abu Dhabi has been spectacular, going from small fishing communities inhabited by pearl divers and fishermen to a cosmopolitan city encompassing many of the innovations of the Twentieth century. This book is a chronicle of the rapid changes in both the landscape of the emirate and its people.
